Seattle, Washington
“The City Seamstresses Built.”
Nobody refers to Seattle by that phrase but maybe they should. The beginnings of the modern Seattle began after a great fire destroyed the fledgling city of primary one and two story wood buildings. When it came time to rebuild about the only people who had money were the seamstresses in town. Now, truth be told, the phrase “seamstress” actually meant prostitute. As a matter of fact, when a reporter came to Seattle to do a story on the 2,700 seamstresses in town, he found not a single one owned a sewing machine!
But they did have money!
